Yoga at Your Desk: Six Simple Moves to Release Tension

28 May 2026 · 4 min read

We were not designed to sit still for eight hours, yet most of us do. By mid afternoon the shoulders creep towards the ears, the lower back aches, and focus starts to slip. The body is asking for movement, and it does not need much.

I teach these moves in corporate sessions all the time, and they are the ones people tell me they actually keep doing. You can do every one of them in your chair, in work clothes, without anyone noticing you are practising yoga at your desk.

One: Neck release

Sit tall. Drop your right ear towards your right shoulder and let the weight of your head do the work. Breathe here for five slow breaths, then switch sides. This is the antidote to the forward head posture we fall into at a screen.

Two: Seated cat and cow

Place your hands on your knees. As you inhale, arch the back gently and lift the chest. As you exhale, round the spine and drop the chin. Move with your breath for five rounds. Your spine will thank you.

Three: Shoulder rolls

Lift both shoulders towards your ears, then roll them back and down. Repeat slowly five times. We carry so much tension here without realising it.

Four: Seated twist

Sit tall and place your right hand on the outside of your left thigh. Gently twist to the left and look over your shoulder. Hold for a few breaths, then switch. Twists wring out tension and aid digestion after lunch.

Five: Wrist and finger stretch

Extend one arm, palm up, and gently draw the fingers back with the other hand. Hold, then turn the palm down and repeat. Hours of typing live in our wrists.

Six: One conscious breath

Close the eyes for a single, slow breath. Inhale for four, exhale for six. One breath, taken with full attention, can reset a frazzled afternoon.

Movement is not a luxury you earn after the work is done. It is what helps the work get done.

None of this requires a wellness budget or a spare hour. It requires permission to pause, which is exactly what a good workplace culture gives its people.

If your team spends its days at desks, a regular yoga session can change how the whole office feels. I run on site corporate sessions across Sydney, designed for complete beginners and seasoned practitioners alike. You can learn more on the corporate wellness page.
